about (bio)
Amsterdam-based artist Candace Alexandres creates harmony where opposing forces intersect. Through delicate transparencies and bold organic shapes, she builds layered abstract paintings that evoke calm introspection. Her work has been featured in solo and group exhibitions in Amsterdam and has been showcased in publications such as Artwork Gallery Magazine and Homiens' Meet the Artist series. Her art is held in private collections in Europe and her home country, the USA.
Artist Statement
My work explores how our sense of self evolves — how memories, choices, and contradictions shape who we are over time.
I delicately balance translucency and opacity in my paintings. A color or shape can show through just enough to hint at what came before or be hidden entirely to make way for something new. To me, that’s what being human feels like. We’re built from every role we assume (child, spouse, parent, friend), every place we’ve been, and every choice we’ve made. Some of those layers sit close to the surface, while others quietly support what comes next.
